So last week for my daily #7daysofstyle I challenged myself to wear a key trend every day. I chose the humble polo neck. Not a particularly exciting garment in the wardrobe and at times something we'd imagine only a retired lady in their 80's would wear with tweed draped under a scarf in church on Sunday. Think again. This item is not only practically warm and comforting for the darker days to come, but a cheap addition that can add a modern take to your winter wardrobe.
Day One: Black ribbed polo neck (M&S) layered under a checked dress (Louche) Fur Gillet (F&F) Suede Boots (Boho)
I loved wearing this look. I bought this dress in autumn 2012. Its a thin dress so I'd only worn in September time with a cardigan. Checks are big news this season and the black layered underneath really makes the print vibrant. My fur gillet adds a new 70's glamour to the look.
Day two: White polo neck (Zara), Black ribbed jumper with faux leather sleeves (Zara autumn 2014) Kharki joggers (Boho) Black Chelsea Boots (Zara winter 2014)
I was off swimming, shopping and had work meeting so I needed a minimal look to suit the variety of my day. This outfit is mainly jersey but the faux leather sleeves of the jumper allow me to wear smart leather chelsea boots. So although I'm wearing total jersey, casual wear, I felt smart and modern and incredibly comfortable. White Polo necks are big this seasons and a good 'face' highlighter if you are wary of black next to your skin. Be careful on the 'bronzer' powder though!
Day Three: Army green cropped polo neck (Toyshop summer 2015), Tapastry dress (Yumi - winter 2014) Skinny Jeans (TopShop) Loafers (Clarks autumn 2105), Poncho (Jigsaw 2003!!)
This is a tailored arty look perfect for an informal work meeting. I've not worn this dress over jeans before but I'm a big fan ! I love the way the dress acts like a long waistcoat and sits under the turtle neck really well. My loafers keep it smart and the poncho floated brilliantly over the top to keep the chill out. The tassel loafers marry up with the tassels on the poncho too.
Day four: Beige polo neck (Primark) Denim dress (Tx Max this season), Beige tasseled ankle boots (Tx Max this season) Scarf (a gift)
Who'd have thought a beige polo neck would work? but under this super fine denim dress it felt perfect for a day out meandering a local antique and emporium centre. Tasselled heeled boots give me some height, and the coloured scarf makes the look more individual and less tonal.
Look five: 70's print dress (vintage) Beige polo neck (Primark) Skinny Jeans (Top Shop) Boots (TX Max)
This is a perfect example of making a summer dress work for the autumn with a polo! I love this vintage print dress and really didn't want to pack it away with my summer dresses! Thanks to the polo neck it works worn with my skinny jeans. I was travelling down to Devon on holidays with the kids so this was easy, stylish fun way of arriving at the in-laws.
