Style Secrets of Clarks Village shopper

Authentic denim , laid back glam, sporty weekend style and full on tonal sophistication.

Outlet not for you ? ….read this first. What I loved at Clarks Village last week.

5 years ago, with 3 dinky primary age daughters in tow, Clarks Village for me was a school shoes shopping destination. Drive in, shoe fit, purchase and leave.. perhaps with the bribery of the carousel and play park if they were lucky.

Now with teenage daughters who love brands like Jack Wills, Hollister, Superdry and Levi’s, Clarks Village is a destination and safe place for them to shop and meet friends.

Finally. I’m free to roam, meander the village on my own.

So what does a mid life fashion concious mum (and stylist) buy at Clarks Village?

Frankly, NOT spending a small fortune was the biggest challenge. Everything I seemed to try on, I loved, all felt incredible current thankfully with a massively discounted price tag.

Here’s where I shopped.

Sugarhill Brighton

I love this brand from Brighton and we are so lucky to have it in Somerset (their only outlet store!) Amazingly most of the clothes in the store are current online, but at Clarks we have the discount price.

Fun, colourful happy clothes, so wearable, for all ages and sizes. Designed in wonderful rainbow colours made from soft comfortable (some organic) feel good fabrics. Perfect for mums who want practical clothes with a big personality.

I’m a real fan of the sport style tracksuit trouser, so I was leaping into these immediately. Elasticated waist, but a flattering fit to wear with trainers or with a blazer for work. Both the tapered pair and the wide legged ones worked brilliantly with my sock trainers I bought from DUNE seconds before.

Slogan Sweatshirts? I love a slogan, but at 44 you have to be careful with what the slogan says. I loved this HOLIDAY sweatshirt teamed under a khaki shirt-jacket and the HOLA felt bit more sophisticated layered over the monochrome shirt dress. I’ve a few pairs of dungaree’s but these soft apron style were cute. I styled with the giraffe print blouse under and also styled the super soft organic Breton striped which I’ve worn all weekend.

Grown up ways to wear Sugarhill

Team your slogan sweatshirt with a blazer and jeans for a grown up look
Pick a slogan that best suits your personality

For a more creative outfit, layer the sweatshirt over a dress or under a shirt

Striped trousers are a subtle way to add colour to your outfit.

They can be dressed up with heels and a blazer or worn sporty with trainers

Go for a larger size so they hang better - they need to have a loose look

Style Dungarees with a printed blouse for a more feminine touch

Breton stripes underneath are an ageless classic style that won’t date

Levis

I did own ‘one’ pair of vintage Levi’s. A flared faded pair which I wear every summer (they are my ‘have I grown’ indicator and much better than getting on the scales!). I bought them in 1998 whilst at Uni.

I now am the proud owner of a 2nd pair , high waist straight legged divinely comfortable and flattering pair.

I was also drawn to the label slogan sport hoodie that looked great styled under the black denim shirt dress (worn as a jacket) There’s something authentic about the Levi’s slogan. A knod to the 90s trend and more suitable for someone my age than Jack Wills.

I styled the check shirt open with a white vest underneath. The white hoodie under the denim dress and then over a vintage t-shirt.

This is how we want to dress every weekend, right?

Tips on layering Levis

Skip the skinny jeans department -they are so dated.

Try on new denim shapes: straight jeans, flared jeans and any shape the young shop assistants are wearing (they were all so helpful)

If you want to do double denim stick with the same colour for top and bottom and choose a lightweight denim

Shirts look better worn open and styled under jackets

Layer your hoodies under your shirts, blazers or smart coats for grown up casual style

Hobbs

Hobbs is the perfect place to build your capsule wardrobe essentials . It is also very trend focussed without being too high fashion. Their tailoring is top of my list on the High Street. Its a beautiful store with the friendliest staff and in store cat.

My eyes fell upon this beautiful lilac combo consisting of tailored trousers and an oversized lilac trench with printed oversized shirt.

Head to toe tonal is wonderfully sophisticated look for SS19 as is purple. The loose, flowing trench is divine worn as a co-ord suit and a refreshing look for event dressing.

These gorgeous pieces were very discounted, so an investment for anyone who needs a beautiful outfit for an occasion this summer.

Tips on tonal style

Keep accessories simple - its all about the tonal flow of the garments

Choose a colour that suits you (I love the biscuit beige trend but its not for me)

Don’t be afraid to layer colour on colour on colour, this is so now

Tonal dressing is very flattering for larger sized women, particularly for apple sized shapes

If you are short (like me) and have a slim waist, do the ‘one tuck’ to show off your waist and give length to your legs

Don’t just save for best. Mix your posh trench with jeans at the weekend

Mint Velvet

Relaxed glamour is what women of my age all want and easy effortless style doesn’t come easy to everyone. As soon as you walk into Mint Velvet, shopping feels easy. The store is beautifully styled, with colour co-ordinated corners. Once deemed as a ‘grey, muted collection in the past, I was immediately struck by all the beautiful colours, all displayed glamorously with complimentary garments sat next to each other.

My eyes were drawn to citrus yellow, pinks, khaki and a divinely printed blue dress.

I felt comfortable, relaxed incredibly glam. I walked out with the yellow fine knit jumper which I styled over the knit vest top, teamed with the khaki chinos.

Tips on effortless style

Shop utility trends that won’t date - the khaki shirt jacket is a must as are the biker jackets

If you are fearful of bright colours, layer an earthy colour over the top like this chunky tank

When layering a midi dress over jeans, pick a slim fit neutral jean to avoid bulk

Make sure the midi dress is unbuttoned up to the waist to show off your silhouette and jeans underneath

To get more mileage from your purchase, buy a few tops that can be worn together or apart and layered over or under one another

Style your footwear so it flows with your outfit - these soft grey biker boots are perfect

The Mint Velvet team invest a lot of time co-ordinating pieces together so look to the merchandised rails for inspiration on how to style
